Causes for Fractures

Bones are rigid but they do bend to a certain point. When that limit is reached that is when a break happens. A fracture is the same thing as a break, and just like a plastic ruler they can snap.

The severity of the fracture usually depends on the force that caused the break. If the force only exceeded the breaking point of the bone then it may only crack the bone. However, when the force is too extreme like during a car accident then the bone may even shatter. It really depends on the event that happens and how much force was applied to the bone itself.

Here are the most common fractures:

  • Stable Fracture: This is when the ends of the broken bones line up and are barely out of place.
  • Open Fracture: This happens when the skin is pierced by the bone that is broken or when the skin breaks at the same time as a fracture. The bone may or may not be visible in the wound.
  • Transverse Fracture: This is when the fracture has a horizontal fracture line.
  • Oblique Fracture: This is when the fracture has an angled pattern.
  • Comminuted Fracture: This is when the bone shatters into three or more pieces.

There are plenty of causes for fractures as well. No matter how old you are or how healthy you are you can still suffer from a broken bone. Here are the most common causes of fractures:

  • Trauma: Falling and landing wrong, a motor vehicle accident, or even while playing sports can cause a fracture to happen. The severity of the fracture is going to depend on the force that was applied to the bone.
  • Osteoporosis: This is a disorder that weakens the bones and makes them more likely to break. This is often the case in the elderly and why their bones break easier.
  • Overuse: This happens when the muscles tire and palace more force on the bone itself. It normally doesn’t crack the bone all the way through, but fractures can happen.
