4 Stages of Migraines
It is important to note that not everyone who suffers from migraines will go through all four stages.
- Prodrome
This is the first stage that many people go through a few days before a migraine happens. You might notice subtle changes to your mood from depression to euphoria. Other changes you might need to look for are constipation, food cravings, neck stiffness, increased thirst, and frequent yawning. The changes can be subtle but if you notice that it happens before each migraine you get then best to keep track of when it happens to when your migraine starts.
- Aura
For some people, an aura might occur before or even during a migraine. These are reversible symptoms of the nervous system. Typically they are visual and they normally begin gradually and build up over several minutes. They can last anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. Some examples of auras include:
- Visual phenomena like shapes, bright spots, or flashes of light
- Vision loss
- Pins and needles sensations in arms or legs
- Weakness or numbness in the face or one side of the body
- Difficulty speaking
- Hearing noises or music
- Uncontrollable jerking
Not everyone is going to go through the aura stage. There are only about a quarter of people with migraines that do.
- Attack
Typically an attack lasts anywhere from four to 72 hours if left untreated. The frequency also varies from person to person. You may find that a migraine is rare or it could be that it strikes several times a month. Some of the symptoms during a migraine include:
- Pain on one side or both sides of the head
- Pain that throbs or pulses
- Sensitive to light, sound, smell, or touch
- Nausea or vomiting
- Pain that worsens with movement
- Post-drome
After a migraine attack, you might feel drained, confused, or washed out for up to a day. Some people have experienced the feeling of being elated but not everyone. Sudden head movements might bring on the pain again briefly. Most though feel as if they can’t just jump back into life, that they need a rest period from it.
